Keyframe Communications wins four Telly Awards

26 Apr by Bryan

A silver and three bronze awards for the full-service video production house from London, Ontario.

London, Ontario; April 24, 2013 — Keyframe Communications has won a silver and three bronze awards in the 34th annual Telly Awards honouring video excellence.

The communications company based in London, Ontario earned a silver award for EB Games and its Christmas commercial entitled The Dodgy Tree. Keyframe earned bronze awards for the Ontario Pork – BBQ TV commercial, the safety orientation video for the EllisDon and for the Middlesex-London Health Unit commercial entitled Quiz Show.

“To win one Telly Award is an honour, but we couldn’t be more proud to win four, especially in four different categories,” said Keyframe executive producer Bryan Peel.

The Telly Awards received nearly 11,000 entries from around the world. The Silver Telly is its highest honour.

A panel of over 500 accomplished industry professionals, each a past winner of a Silver Telly and a member of The Silver Telly Council, judged the competition. Each entry is scored on a 10-point scale by the judges. Fewer than 10 per cent score high enough to earn a Silver Telly. About a quarter of the entries had a high enough grade to earn a Bronze Telly.

“The Telly Awards has a mission to honour the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Telly Awards. “Keyframe’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”

“I am blessed to work with an amazing team at Keyframe,” Peel said. “I want to thank everyone for their hard work and amazing creative.”

The spot was produced by Bryan Peel, written and directed by Randy Diplock, had David Suddaby at the DP helm, edited by Matt Winkler and with many more in between, the spot really came together. Our client was thrilled and the director of Brand Marketing called it a “wonderful spot”.

Checking Out The Hottest New Technology: NAB 2012 – Las Vegas

22 Apr by Bryan

NAB 2012 has wrapped up and it was cool to meet some of our new suppliers in person, chat with some long time ones and demo some new gear.

One main purpose of attending this year was to see what could possibly replace our FCP suites. I was really looking at some sort of FCX and Smoke integration, but was surprised to see that Autodesk has completely rebuilt Smoke and transformed it into a video editing and visual effects tool for the Mac.

I had a one-on-one demo on Tuesday and the artist showed off many of the traditional and new features of Smoke. While I was glad to see that they brought the powerful node-based compositing right onto the timeline, I was a bit disappointed watching the system crash several times while performing some very basic editing tasks. I’ll have to download the demo once it’s available in June and really test it out.

Still on the post side, I watched the Adobe Premiere 6 demo, ran through the Avid booth (meh) and avoided the temptation of Quantel.

To sum up the post side of things, I think that FCX as a basic editing tool will be hard to beat for quick turnaround projects. Remember, it isn’t being promoted as a compositing system – it’s editing software. Let’s be realistic. At the end of the day, it is the artist at the helm who makes the final product a winner.

The use of LTO in the post process is by far the best solution for project archival and LTO5 seems to be gaining popularity on the show floor.

Tiger Technology was there and Bernard demoed the new release of Metasan (sweeet).

New in version 5:

  • Dynamic ProjectStore: Edit with Avid, Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro.
  • Dashboard Management: Get a bird’s eye view of your SAN in real time.
  • Remote SAN Monitoring: SANguard monitors the wellbeing of your SAN through remote diagnostics.
  • Organic Scale-Out Storage Cluster: Store, expand, tier and migrate data with extreme ease.
  • Access Control and User Authentication: Mac users can now authenticate against Active Directory.

Other general notes: Go Pro, Canon, AJA and Blackmagic seemed to really draw the crowds. It was cool to see everyone drooling over the C300 and C500 at Canon – and for good reason, too.

Blackmagic released a new Cinema Camera. I really don’t understand why they want to go down this road. While I am more interested on the post side of things, I did spend a few minutes watching the rep demo it at the Supermeet on Tuesday. Overall, I think it would be a decent camera for a fixed environment but not for any “run and gun” work. Plus, it seems to have the “jello” effect with movement.

Well, that’s a wrap for NAB 2012. Had a great stay at Aria and looking forward to NAB 2013 and another Vegas trip this fall.
